Family Issues

An excellent comprehensive guide to ‘Understanding Your Teenager – a guide for parents/carers’.

Recognising that the teenage years can be an emotional assault course, Northumberland County Council in partnership with the Northumberland Youth Offending Service, Parenting Initiatives and the Northumberland Children’s Fund have produced a guide to help understand teenagers with the aim of building a much closer and ultimately more rewarding relationship.

The pages are packed full of excellent advice on topics such as anti-social behaviour, bullying, children with disabilities, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, friendships and peer pressure, stress and anxiety, truancy and internet abuse and exploitation. At the end of each section are lists of local and national agencies who can offer advice or support.

For a copy of this guide contact Chris Metcalfe on 01670 533000.

PARENT INITIATIVE

For a list of workshop opportunities for mums, dads and carers to help understanding teenagers, contact Parent Initiative on 01670 798812 or 798830.  Courses are also publicized through county each term.
Their mission statement says ‘Parenting Initiatives aims to support parents and carers of children and young people aged 0 – 18 years promoting the understanding that parenting is unique to each family.  Parenting Initiatives establishes a relationship based on the belief that parents have the resources and capability to develop themselves.’

Quotes from parents who have attended groups:

‘Discovered my fears are the same as others and I wasn’t going to let my fears stop me doing anything’

‘More confident, a lot more knowledge and much more patient with my children’.

‘Found step by step strategies to use with my children and that has helped them as well as me’.
